What’s included in a Resume?
A resume contains your professional goal and summary of qualifications. Let’s look at the various parts of a resume and what each part should include:
- Job Objective: This is the single most important part of your entire resume. These few sentences will determine if a prospective employer will continue to read the rest of your resume. If you have a weak Job Objective, then the rest of your resume does not matter.
- Clearly state what job you are applying for and the professional qualities you will bring to the company.
- Education: Things to include in this section:
- Dates, school names, workshop names, seminar names and diplomas earned.
- Depending on your industry, you may list certificates and awards in this section.
- Work History: Things to include in this section:
- Paid and Unpaid job positions.
- Start and end dates
- Name and location of company
- Skills and Abilities: This section will include all of the skills and abilities you have acquired through work experience or volunteering.
- A skill is something that you learned. Examples include: answering calls and peer supervision.
- Ability is a professional quality that you have. Examples include: Excellent communication skills and well-organized.
- References: This section must always go at the end of your resume. The purpose of this section is to provide your prospective employer with two people who will validate the work experience and skill you want to bring to their company. You have two options.
- Write, “References available upon request.”
- Write: name, occupation, address and phone number of two individuals.
