Surviving the Interview
Once you submit a strong resume accompanied by an effective cover letter, you will need to prepare for an interview. An interview is your opportunity to share information with your prospective employer. Below are key things to remember before, during and after your interview.
Before:
- Research and find out as much as you can about the company, your job responsibilities and the salary range for your position. If possible, research about your interviewer.
- Based on your research, write down a three questions with answers that you think your interviewer may ask.
- Prepare questions to ask your interviewer about the company or job position.
- Have a copy of your resume and cover letter.
- Take time for good grooming and hygiene.
- Make sure you know exactly what you would like to wear and have it “clean and ready” for your interview day.
- Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
- Visit the job site to determine location and parking.
During:
- Extend your hand for a professional firm hand shake and introduce yourself with a pleasant smile.
- Do not chew gum.
- Relax and present yourself with confidence.
- Maintain comfortable eye contact with your interviewer.
- Demonstrate good posture.
- Speak with enthusiasm and energy.
- Use effective verbs to describe your skills and abilities.
- Speak in a positive tone and do not say negative things about previous employers.
- Maintain a professional attitude.
- Ask questions about the company or job position. Do not ask about salary until offered the job.
After:
- Thank the interviewer for his/her time and shake hands with a smile. Be sure to maintain eye contact and ask for a business card if you did not exchange one in the beginning.
- Send a thank you card one day after your interview. This is a very nice personal touch and will set you apart from other candidates.
- Once you receive a formal offer to accept the job position, you may negotiate your salary/hourly wage.
